Ever since I was a child, I have been passionate about food. I was raised by my grandparents, who lived in the countryside and had an enormous garden. They grew all their own vegetables and kept a goat to provide them with milk and other products. Having grown up in hard times, they considered it a sin to food, and even if fruit was , they’d it in jars rather than throw it away.
One of my earliest memories is of being sent out to the garden to collect to toss in a salad for lunch. My grandmother served these salads, with roasted potatoes, carrots, and other , which grew year-round in the flower beds behind the house.
Living far from any shops, my grandmother cooked all our food from scratch. Her specialty was such as bread, cakes, and other tasty treats. As a result, we were never given or anything that came in plastic. In fact, it wasn’t until I left home that I ate my first biscuit from a packet.
My grandmother was an excellent cook, and her food was never . She used to her dishes with spices, and marinate meats before cooking them in tasty oils, sauces, and dressings.
Nowadays, I live in a city with an array of excellent restaurants on my doorstep. And though their food is great, nothing will ever taste as good as the delicious, fresh food I grew up with.
