✉️ How to Write an Email – B1 Preliminary (PET) Exam

B1 English Writing Guide

📝 What Is the Task?

In the B1 Preliminary (PET) writing exam, you may be asked to write an informal email to a friend. You’ll receive a message with questions or suggestions—and notes telling you what to include in your reply.

Example exam task:

📩 From: Alex
Subject: Your visit!
Hi, I’m really excited that you’re coming to stay next month!
On your first evening, there’s a food festival. Would you like to go, or prefer a quiet dinner at home?
Also, I was thinking we could go cycling along the river one day. What do you think?
Let me know if you have any questions!
See you soon,
Alex

Your notes:
✍ I am excited too!
✍ Say which I prefer (festival or dinner)
✍ No, because… + suggest a different activity
✍ Ask Alex a question

You must include all the points from your notes. Missing even one can lower your score. Write in a friendly, natural tone—as if texting or emailing a real friend!

🧱 Email Structure

1. Greeting & Opening
  • Hi Alex, or Hey Alex,
  • • Show excitement: “I’m really excited too!”
2. Respond to the First Question

Choose dinner or festival—and explain why:

  • “I’d prefer a quiet dinner at home.”
  • “After travelling, I’ll be too tired for a big event.”
3. Respond to the Second Suggestion

Say no politely, give a reason, and suggest an alternative:

  • “Cycling sounds great, but I have a foot injury.”
  • “How about we go to the park for a picnic instead?”
  • “What do you think?”
4. Ask a Question & Close
  • “By the way, what’s the weather like?”
  • “See you soon!”
  • • Sign off with your name: Serena

Subject: Re: Your visit!

Hey Alex,

I’m really excited too! I can’t wait to see you and spend time together. It’s going to be such a fun trip!

About the food festival, I’d prefer a quiet dinner at home. After travelling, I think I’ll be too tired for a big event, and a cosy evening sounds perfect for catching up. Maybe we could cook something special together instead?

As for cycling, it sounds great, but unfortunately, I have a foot injury, and I can’t cycle or run. How about going to a park instead? We could have a picnic, relax outdoors, and take some nice photos. What do you think?

By the way, what’s the weather like there? Should I bring a jacket, or will it be warm?

See you soon!
Serena
