Writing About My Neighbourhood – A1 English

🟩Think about your neighbourhood

Before you start writing, answer these questions to plan your ideas:

• Where do you live? → I live in a small town / a big city / a quiet neighbourhood.
• What is there in your neighbourhood? → There is a park, a library, and some shops.
• Where are things located? → The bakery is next to the pharmacy. The park is in the centre.
• What do you like about it? → I like the park because it’s peaceful.
• What don’t you like? → I don’t like the traffic—it’s very slow.
• Is it busy or quiet? Friendly or crowded? → It’s quiet and friendly.

🟩There is / There are

Use There is (or There’s) for one thing. Use There are for more than one.

• Singular: There is a pharmacy near my house. / There isn’t a mall.
• Plural: There are some cafés on the main street. / There aren’t any bus stops.
• Use some, a few, a lot of with positives: There are a few schools.
• Use any in negatives: There aren’t any supermarkets.

🟩And, with, but

• And connects similar ideas:
  There’s a library and a café in my street.
• With adds details about a place:
  There’s a park with a lake and trees.
• But shows contrast:
  There are shops, but there isn’t a supermarket.

🟩Has / Has got

You can also describe places using has or has got:

• The park has a lake, but it doesn’t have a playground.
• My neighbourhood has got everything I need.

🟩Locations & Prepositions of Place

Use direction words and prepositions to be more precise:

• Directions: The library is in the north of the neighbourhood.
• Prepositions:
  • near: There’s a bookshop near the school.
  • next to: The pharmacy is next to the health centre.
  • between: A small park is between the library and the supermarket.
  • behind / in front of: There’s a car park in front of the mall.
  • opposite: The café is opposite the library.

🟩Useful Adjectives

Make your writing more vivid with these words:

• The town is: small, friendly, big, busy
• The park is: pretty, nice, peaceful
• The supermarket is: convenient, useful, big
• Public transport is: good, convenient, poor, bad
• The views are: great, wonderful
• The traffic is: slow, bad, heavy

🟩What you like or don’t like

Share your opinion to make your essay personal:

• I like the library because I can read books there.
• I don’t like the traffic near my house because it’s always slow.
• There’s a park in my neighbourhood, and I enjoy walking there in the mornings.

My Neighbourhood

I live in a small, friendly neighbourhood. It has everything I need. There is a park near my house, and I like walking there in the mornings. The park is pretty, and it has a lake, but it doesn’t have a playground. There are some small shops in the centre of the neighbourhood. For example, there’s a bakery, a pharmacy, and a grocery store, but there isn’t a big supermarket.

My neighbourhood also has a library. The library is in the north of the town, opposite a small café. I like the café because it’s very convenient. There are a few schools, too. There’s a primary school in the south of the neighbourhood, but there isn’t a secondary school.

One bad thing about my neighbourhood is the traffic. The traffic is slow, and there aren’t many bus stops, but the views are great. I like my neighbourhood because it’s quiet and nice!

🟩Plan your paragraphs

1. Paragraph 1: Introduce your neighbourhood—where it is, what kind of place it is (quiet, busy, etc.), and list key places using There is/are.
2. Paragraph 2: Describe locations in more detail using prepositions and directions. Mention what the neighbourhood has.
3. Paragraph 3: Say what you like and don’t like. End with your overall opinion.
