🟦Another vs Other (Determiners)

Use as determiners — before a noun.

✅ Another + Singular Noun

  • I need another cup of coffee.
  • Can I have another chance?

✅ Other + Plural Noun

  • I want to talk to other doctors.
  • Let’s visit other cities next week.

❌ I want to talk to others doctors.
✅ I want to talk to other doctors.

🟩Another vs Others (Pronouns)

✅ Another (Pronoun)

Not followed by a noun — refers to one more thing/person:

  • I’ve had one beer, but I’ll have another.
  • This shirt is too small — do you have another?

✅ Others (Pronoun)

Always plural, never followed by a noun:

  • I don’t like these glasses. Are there any others?
  • Some students passed; others failed.

✅ Other + Plural Noun

  • I want to see other shops before deciding.
  • She has visited other countries in Asia.

✅ Others (Pronoun)

  • Many volunteers joined us, but we need to find others.
  • Some agreed; others were unsure.

🟨The Other / The Others

✅ The Other + Singular Noun

Refers to the second of two, or the opposite in a pair:

  • This computer is new. The other computer is five years old.
  • She held a book in one hand and the other hand was empty.

✅ The Other + Plural Noun

Refers to the remaining in a known group:

  • Joel and Karen are here. Where are the other kids?
  • I read two chapters; I’ll finish the other chapters tomorrow.

✅ The Other / The Others (Pronouns)

  • This computer is new. The other is five years old.
  • Joel and Karen are here. Where are the others?

🟥Common Mistakes & Quick Summary

❌ Others people think it’s easy.
✅ Other people think it’s easy.

❌ I want to try another restaurants.
✅ I want to try another restaurant (singular)
✅ I want to try other restaurants (plural).

❌ Where is the others? (if referring to one thing)
✅ Where is the other? (if one remains)
✅ Where are the others? (if multiple remain)

📌 Quick Summary

  • Another = one more (singular noun or pronoun)
  • Other = different / additional (before plural nouns)
  • Others = other ones (pronoun, plural, no noun after)
  • The other = the second/remaining one (singular)
  • The others = the remaining ones (plural)

📌 Remember:
Another → + singular noun OR alone (pronoun)
Other → + plural noun
Others → pronoun (no noun after)
The other → specific singular remaining item
The others → specific plural remaining items
⚠️ Never say “others + noun” — use “other + plural noun” instead.
