During, For, While: Grammar Chart
🟦During → When something happens
Use during + noun to say when something happens.
- ✅ Some people got lost during the journey.
- ✅ I will finish the novel during the summer break.
- ✅ Most burglaries happen during the night.
🟩For → How long something lasts
Use for + length of time to say how long something happens.
- ✅ We have known each other for a long time.
- ✅ I waited for more than an hour, but I finally left.
- ✅ He worked in this company for over twenty years.
🟪While → Two things happening at the same time
Use while + subject + verb to talk about simultaneous actions.
- ✅ I had breakfast while you were in the shower.
- ✅ I always listen to the radio while I’m cleaning.
- ✅ You shouldn’t use your phone while you are driving.
🟨During vs For
During = when | For = how long
➤ Every day I run for one hour. → How long?
➤ I usually run during the weekend. → When?
🟦During vs While
During + noun | While + subject + verb
➤ I fell asleep during the film. → (noun)
➤ I fell asleep while I was watching the film. → (clause)

📌 Remember:
During tells you when → “during the movie”
For tells you duration → “for two hours”
While connects two actions → “while I was cooking”
⚠️ Never say: ❌ “during I was sleeping” → Use ❗ “while I was sleeping”
💡 Ask: “Is it a noun?” → use during. “Is it a clause?” → use while.
