Present Simple vs Present Continuous – Grammar Guide
Use Present Simple for habits and permanent situations; Present Continuous for actions happening now or temporarily.
Present Simple – Habits & Permanent Situations
We use the present simple for:
- Habits that happen regularly
- Permanent situations (things that are always or often true)
✅ Examples: Habits
- I wash my hair every day.
- I never go to the library.
- We usually order pizza on Fridays.
✅ Examples: Permanent Situations
- I don’t drink coffee.
- She is very tall.
- Water boils at 100°C.
- I have two brothers.
Adverbs of Frequency
We often use adverbs like:
- usually, always, often, sometimes, never
- twice a week, every day
Stative (Non-Action) Verbs
Some verbs describe states, not actions. We use them in the present simple, NOT the present continuous.
- be, have (possession), like, love, hate, want, need, know, prefer
✅ I like chocolate.
❌ I’m liking chocolate.
✅ They have a new car.
❌ They are having a new car.
Present Continuous – Actions Now or Temporarily
We use the present continuous for:
- Actions happening now, at the moment of speaking
- Temporary situations happening around now

- "What are you doing?" "I ‘m watching TV."
- Look! It is raining.
✅ Examples: Temporary Situations
- I ‘m reading a great book at the moment.
- She is studying English this week.
- What series are you watching these days?
Common Time Expressions
- now, right now
- at the moment, today
- this week, these days
Key Differences
- Present Simple: habits, permanent truths
✅ "I work in an office." (permanent job) - Present Continuous: temporary actions
✅ "I ‘m working in an office." (temporary job) - Present Simple: usually do
✅ "I listen to the radio." (habit) - Present Continuous: doing now
✅ "I ‘m listening to the radio." (right now) - What do you do? = your job
