🟢 Use A/An

  • First mention — when introducing something for the first time:
    “I saw an old woman with a dog.”
  • Jobs or descriptions:
    “Paula is a teacher.”
    “Paris is an interesting city.”
  • ❗ Never use singular countable nouns alone:
    I don’t have driving license. → I don’t have a driving license.
    This hotel doesn’t have spa. → This hotel doesn’t have a spa.

🔵 Use The

  • Second mention:
    “A man and a woman sat down. The man was British.”
  • Specific things (when it’s clear which one):
    “Can you open the door?”
    “Where are the kids? — In the garden.”
  • Only one exists:
    “The moon is bright tonight.”
    “She’s the manager of this store.”
  • Common places:
    “I’m going to the bank / the doctor / the cinema.”
  • Musical instruments:
    “He plays the piano and the guitar.”
  • Superlatives:
    “This is the best restaurant in town.”

🟠 Use No Article (-)

  • General meaning (plural or uncountable nouns):
    “I don’t drink - milk.”
    “- Women drive carefully.”
    “I love - music.” (≠ “I loved the music at the party.”)
  • Meals:
    “We had - breakfast at 8.”
  • Days, months, years:
    “- Friday is my favorite day.”
    “- 2025 will be great.”
  • TV (as broadcast):
    “I saw it on - TV.” (≠ “Turn off the TV.”)
  • Languages & school subjects:
    “She studies - biology.”
    “He speaks - Spanish.”
  • Next / Last + time (relative to now):
    “The meeting is - next Monday.”
    “I saw her - last week.”
    ❗ But: “On the last day of our trip...”
